What's in a Logo?

What's in a logo? Does it symbolize what your paranormal group/ investigators stand for? Is there meaning to it? There are so many types of logos...names, shapes, things of historical prominence, things that mean something personal, and things that don't mean anything at all. I decided one day to see what our logo actually meant and what it should mean to us....

The original A.P.S. Logo was made by our now retired (one of the original trio) Co-Founder Ryan Williams (with a few pieces of input here and there from me, Becky). There were back and forth emails for weeks. First we knew we wanted to have the Maltese Cross, why you may ask? It just looked cool, no real reason behind it *chuckling*. We didn't even fully understand what the Maltese Cross was used for or even if what it symbolized (isn't that the logo for OCC?). Our originial logo (below) was very eyecatching and we had A LOT of VERY nice compliments on it!!!

As times changed and the group changed, the logo we decided needed a pick me up. With new T-Shirts and members we had to transition into a design with less colors (lots of colors means LOTS of money) but was still eye catching. Hillary Maples (retired Core Investigator and graphic extraordinare) made up our current Black and White Logo in keeping with the original Maltese Cross. And that logo may change over time, but it's officially become OUR logo. The cross and all it's meaning has become what Antietam Paranormal Society is and hopes to remain...

Our New Logo

Our Maltese Cross, actually a cross pattée, is a type of cross that has arms which are narrow at the center, and broader at the perimeter. The variation we used with the ends of the arms convex and curved; sometimes called "Alisee" (French croix pattée alésée arrondie), is different than most Maltese Crosses being used. The cross pattée is also sometimes associated with another Crusader order, the Knights Templar, though it was not used consistently. The Templars did adopt a red cross on their white robes in 1147, but there was no specific style designated, and different Templars used different versions of the cross. The pattée was by no means their official symbol. However, some modern Freemason organizations do use the pattée in an official way, and this use occasionally causes confusion as to which version was used by the medieval order of Knights Templar.

The Antietam Paranormal Society Logo is definitely used in the belief that we are on a crusade, to find, to educate, and to discover answers for ourself and others. The eight points of our Maltese Cross stand for similar teachings of the Venerable Order of St. John;

-Observant (to stay alert to all things)

-Tactful (to keep a sense of what is considerate in dealing with others)

-Resourceful (to be ingenious, capable, and full of initiative)
-Dexterous (to be mentally and physically adroit)
-Explicit (to be fully and clearly expressed, never implied)
-Discriminating (to be able to see distinctions and remain perceptive)
-Persevering (to be consistent and remain constant to our purpose)
-Sympathetic (to be understanding to everyone; peers, clients, and colleagues)

We all enjoy seeing everyones creativeness in their logos! Sometimes its the first thing a client or newcomer may see. I hope that us sharing our Logo the thought behind it originally and how we look at it now, will help those of you interested or seeking a logo of your own!
