BOOK REVIEW: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Ghosts and Hauntings by Tom Ogden

The Complete Idiot's Guide To Ghosts and Hauntings by Tom Ogden.

Yes I did. I read it, from cover to cover. Right now this book actually looks like it barely survived World War 3, thanks to our Australian Cattle Dog, Max whittling his puppy teeth on the first 30 pages. While we have owned this one the longest it is not my favorite nor is it my "go to" text for paranormal information. However do not be put off by the name it has a lot of great information which touches the surface of what a person should learn about the paranormal to get started.

IGGH takes you back to the ghostly apparitions that were mentioned by Homer, Socrates, and Plato; the phantoms of ancient Greek and Roman times. It talks about early and current religious and cultural belief's in ghosts, and how it's changed over time. Urban Legends, folklore, ancient omens, and superstition! From the "cry of the banshee" to amulets and charms that ward off dark spirits. Poltergeists, Mediums, and Spiritualism, each have their own detailed chapters. IGGH talks of early Paranormal Investigation to today's paranormal investigators. Harry Price to current paranormal groups and how to go about your own investigations. How to detect paranormal fraud (these days this should be a requirement in a paranormal book!), skepticism and what characterizes a ghost or haunting. The second half of the book is a HUGE amount of information on famous haunted locations, in the US, England, churches, houses, battlefields, and more. The amount of subjects in regards to the paranormal that this book touches on is a bit mind boggling but it is a great book for beginners.

The author of IGGH made it incredibly easy to read, understand, and retain the information given to you, all with a touch of humor. In reading IGGH make note of the "Spooky Boxes" which provide anecdotes, tips and hints for contacting the spirit world, things to avoid, and paranormal terminology. These boxes throughout the book are actually very helpful and enlightening. Would I recommend this book? YES. If you are just starting out, well on your way as a paranormal enthusiast or investigator, and even those of you just researching the paranormal, go ahead and give it a try.
