Things That Could Be Paranormal...

The paranormal field is a broad spectrum of categories of supernatural phenomena. While our particular team focuses on hauntings, ghosts, and other entities; there are also cryptids, aliens, and UFOs. This blog is specifically geared toward things that may be present in a haunting or are manifestations of spirits. I would be remiss if I didn't state up front that many things on this list can be debunked and should always be investigated to determine if the percipient misinterpreted those natural events.

TEMPERATURE CHANGES
Some paranormal investigators and percipients (people who experience the phenomena) describe the presence of a spirit as a rapid decrease in temperature, where a warm room suddenly becomes ice cold. These cold spots, drafts, breezes, or temperature changes should be documented with a good ambient thermometer that measures the air, not surfaces. Drafts or breezes can be checked with a draft detector or a thermometer before and during the investigation to determine if there are leaks around the location that may cause these anomalies.

VISUAL ANOMALIES
This category can cover a multitude of things; mists, shadow figures, light anomalies, amorphous shadows, and full-bodied apparitions. Many people have seen figures like the Hat Man that is a well defined shadow figure that looms in the night wearing a broad brimmed hat, white misty ladies that stand on staircases or traipse down hallways, pin points or round balls of light that can be seen with the naked eye, strange shadows that seem to crawl down hallways and up walls, and even people that seem real but disappear as quickly as they appeared. While seeing these with the naked eye can be a trick of the light, many can be collaborated by multiple people. Visual anomalies that are captured in photography or video, require the operator to return to the area in the same conditions to check to see if there is a reason that the anomaly appeared. Slow shutter, inadequate light, light refraction, shaky camera, air particles, and more can cause a whole host of explainable anomalies. If you are going to utilize any type of equipment, even a still camera, cell phone camera, or video camera; should ALWAYS understand how the camera works and it's false positives.

OLFACTORY ANOMALIES
Many people claim experiences of visitations by loved ones in the form of smells. Cigar smoke, pipe smoke, cigarette smoke, perfume, flowers, and more have been attributed to these types of experiences which appear faintly as if someone walked by. Sometimes the smells increase and sometimes they are just whispers. While there are no pieces of equipment that will collect smell data, it should be an automatic response to determine if there is a source for the smell that you may not be aware of. Some scents are just an amalgamation of various scents that trick the mind in believe it is something other than it really is.

APPORTATION OR ASPORTATION OF OBJECTS
I personally think that objects moving is the coolest thing in the world. Many people have seen objects move through the air, have things disappear and reappear (not necessarily in front of their eyes), doors shut or open, and more. I personally saw a spoon fly up out of a draining tray and land back into the draining tray in a sink. I wasn't the only person who saw it move directly, others saw it and a few only heard it as they were not looking at it directly. I have seen doors close by themselves and open by themselves. Years ago we had a potential case where a child who was in a tough family situation was the living agent in the activity. Many people had noted things would fly off the counter and out of drawers when the child was around. The freezer would open and food would be thrown by an invisible force down the hallway. While these could not be explained, the percipient should always make sure these objects or items are secure and there are no means for them to move for a reason you may not be aware of at the time.

DISEMBODIED SOUNDS
Footsteps that trudge up and down staircases, voices that whisper your name, piano music that wafts about empty halls, or even wailing or screaming; these disembodied sounds can be the most common experience there is of paranormal phenomena. Many of these sounds are heard with the naked ear and are collected on an audio recording device or even a video camera. Any sound that you cannot readily explained should be investigated to determine if there is a source you were not previously aware of at the time. Sound has a habit of carrying over distances and can be distorted in ways that are unidentifiable.

EMOTIONS OR THOUGHTS
There are many people who claim they have been struck by fear for no reason, had goose bumps appear out of no where, start crying for no reason, or have other emotional changes abruptly. These could be explained by mental illness, but what if it was a perfectly sane person? It could be high levels of unhealthy chemicals in the location or a chill in the air, but either way they should always be checked with any devices that would measure them. Thermometers, carbon monoxide detectors, utilize radon tests, EMF (electromagnetic field) detectors, and more. Even thoughts or changes in cognitive ability can be explained by high infrasound.

While these are not by any means the only things people experience, they are the most common. I am sure through the years I will always jump back to this blog and will add to it when needed. Do you have a paranormal experience not listed?
